Customer Project 54: January 2023 Flavour of the Month
Brattles Barn

“I had spent ages searching for the right lights online and then I spotted lumière while driving past,” our client Sally explained. Sally fell hard for a light in the lumière window but needed help with incorporating it into the scheme for the barn conversion they were undertaking. Sally was unsure about which configuration, drop and sizes might work. Sally also wanted some inspiration for the kitchen island lights. The lumière gallery team suggested they book me in for a site visit.

As I turned into the little mud track leading to the building site, all the way back in 2021, despite there not being much to look at internally other than mdf boards, it was already clear what a magical place this was. With a backdrop of orchards, tall trees and green views for days, I was in my element.  I wanted the feature lights to compliment the contemporary lines of this imposing structure.

My aim for the kitchen island lights was to find pieces which would fit the timeless style Sally had chosen, and provide ambient lighting in the evening when all the other lights were off; without causing an obstruction to the views through the large glass bifold doors.

The most important consideration for me though was the view from the outside looking in.

Sally looked at me slightly bemused when I asked to step out into the “garden”. While I climbed over planks and bricks to reach the highest external viewing point, I quizzed Sally on how the outside space would be used.

As I stood there in a mud bath, looking back at the house, in my mind, the building site disappeared and was replaced with a beautiful painting of the finished build…

Three Cubists in different sizes, floating beautifully in symmetry under the roof windows and in line with the panes of glass in the centre of the build; their chains getting lost among the black balustrade.

The Katies in the kitchen, (also on chains) quietly holding their own, and offering a soft glow in the summer for diners enjoying food, cocktails and intimate conversations on the patio.

Thank you Sally for allowing us to be part of this incredible build.

Love and light
